From the day that five year old Joey Lyons and Bobby Rothschild met, it was instant brotherhood. They were an odd pair, the surly, stocky little boy and his lively ginger buddy with a sweet disposition, but nothing could separate them. They would sneak into each other's rooms at night to sleep close, got into fights together, shared secrets with each other.
Secrets like the one Joey kept from everyone...the reason why he didn't get burned the one time he accidentally touched the back of the radiator. The reason he never had trouble reading after lights out...the reason why nobody picked on him as much as they could have.
For six months, Bobby kept Joey's secret about having magic powers--until their impenetrable friendship expanded to include the three year old little girl that suddenly showed up at the breakfast table one day. Both boys were fascinated by the toddler, driving their caregivers crazy by begging to help take care of her. Within a few weeks, both were joined at the hip to little Bellarose, dubbed Bitty by her new friends.
For two years, they were the Team: inseparable, loyal, and unabashedly loved each other like blood. Life in the home wasn't easy for the trio, but they all had each other--until the Halloween night that the dragons came for them.
They came posing as new caregivers from the home, a pale angel and her dark, terrifying protectors. In their charge, the three found safety and comfort, and in their companionship they found promises of a home. The truth came out that they were not who they claimed to be, but visited the children often, until the three spent their nights after lights out huddled in one bed, lit by Joey's careful little fires while they told themselves fairy tales about a princess and her soldiers, whisking three orphans away to live happily ever after.
The fairy tale soon became a reality--during a fire that consumed the group home, many of the children disappeared and were believed to be dead...including the trio of Joey, Bobby, and little Bellarose, whom their new friends took to a magical land full of mages like Joey...and dragons, like Bellarose, who soon learned she was not as human as they believed her to be.
From then on, life was good for Bobby and his new family. While Bitty and Joey filled their days with instruction, Bobby felt lost for a while--like, perhaps, it would have been better if their new parents had taken on a third, more extraordinary child. Thankfully, however, Bobby formed a swift bond with his ocean born father, discovering not only a love of swimming, but that despite his size he was gifted with incredible speed and agility. It was this discovery that, while his siblings studied magic, led Bobby to begin his training as a warrior, and during visits in New York for Bitty to study with her people, start studying boxing.
In time, the trio grew up--brothers and sister, best friends, lost and lonely orphans turned happy and healthy adults.
Happy and healthy adults, living between worlds...and slowly starting to realize that their lifelong bond might be a little more than just friendship...
